As commissions go, we gotta say, this was an ideal one. Ann Edgerton Interiors reached out asking if we could design a custom live edge walnut slab coffee table for a client of theirs and I pretty much broke my keyboard responding so quickly.
After checking out the sketch of the general design we headed over to Mesquite Valley Woodworks for some slab hunting. They have hundreds of slabs and once the client saw a few options we were able to pick up this beauty.
With the slab chosen we got to the design phase where they asked if we could come up with a number of designs based on wanting:
- 30in x 60in slab
- 18in finish height
- Wood legs
- Complimentary shelf 6in off the ground
We got to drawing and after seeing a few designs they chose this look with a wide lower shelf and some chunky 8/4 walnut legs.
We got to work with the slab and some killer 4/4 and 8/4 walnut from Dakota Hardwoods and let me tell ya, seeing that slab finally set on the base was a dang good moment.
And finally, after some bow ties and a lot, a LOT, of sanding it was time for everyone's favorite stage. Adding Rubio Monocoat. We went with the ever lovely and incredibly durable Oil Plus 2c Pure to let that slab shine in all it's natural glory.
Did we lose it seeing that figuring pop with the Rubio? Yeah, of course we did. And thankfully, so did Ann and the client. Here's the final product in the client's space.
